#uNIGHTed Ghost

On June 1st, 2014 a 12-year-old girl in Wisconson was stabbed 19 times by two other 12-year-old girls who were dumb enough to believe that Slenderman exists and that they could summon him with a human sacrifice.

Last Friday (June 13th, 2014) a bunch of people in the creepypasta community got together to host a charity live stream to raise money for the victim and for SafeHorizon.org, an organization for the aid of victims of violent crimes. In addition to donating and watching the stream, they asked their followers to show their support by sending in pictures featuring a yellow rose with a blue and yellow ribbon tied around it as a symbol of compassion and their slogan "Stand for creativity, not reality". Supporters were also encouraged to share the stream on Twitter and Tumblr using the hashtag uNIGHTed.

Unfortunately I was't able to submit anything to the stream in time so instead I painted this while the stream was still going on and tweeted the process with the uNIGHTed hashtag throughout the day. I also shared it in its sketch phase and its final phase on Tumblr. While it would've been cool to have my art as part of the stream, I like to think that I helped more this way since the more it got retweeted and reblogged the more chances it got to reach more people who would be willing donate.

The ghost in this picture is based on my imaginary friend from 1st grade. He was a ghost and his name was Ghost. You can read more about him here.

One last thing. I'm sorry to confess that when I was making this painting I didn’t realize that the yellow rose was supposed to be thornless. Obviously a symbol of compassion shouldn't have little barbs that hurt whoever touches it but I just thought it looked cool. I feel so dumb.
