Description

This was a assignment for an illustration class I did last year (January 2011).

I made a mistake while painting the wall behind the toilet. I tried to fix it with water but it started wearing down the illustration board. Then I got the idea to paint over it with acrylic paint. Unfortunately, I didn't take into account the fact that acrylic paint can't absorb gauche the same way cold press illustration board can and I got this odd effect when I tried to add shading to it. I ended up doing the same thing to the tub, toilet, and cupboards just so the wall wouldn't look out of place. I like it. It gives it a sort of grimy look. If I can think of a good use for it, I might try it again when I know what I'm doing.

Counterclockwise from left:
Akaname
A creature that sneaks into people's bathrooms and licks the grime off the walls.

I'm especially proud of how this one turned out. I don't always draw characters with such detailed anatomy. There was going to be a tenjoname (ceiling licker) standing next to him but I couldn't fit it in.

Teacher's comment: "Lookit his funny butt! Doesn't he have a funny butt?"

Toire no Hanako-san
A little girl ghost that can be summoned by standing in front of the third stall in a girls public bathroom and calling out to her.

One of my classmates pointed out that Hanako is the cutest character in the picture but she's the one causing the most destruction.

The Demon in the Mirror
Unfortunately, I don't know too much about this yokai aside from the fact that I've seen him appear in two different manga: Lum: Uresei Yatsura and Hanako and the Terror of Allegory. Both manga featured a story involving a demon appearing when a character holds a mirror up to a mirror at midnight on Friday the 13th. And since both series take their inspiration from Japanese folklore and urban legends I'd say it's likely more than coincidence.

If you have any information on this monster please tell me

Kamikiri
lit. "Hair cutter" A creature that sneaks up on women and cuts their hair.

Somehow it seemed natural to me that a hair cutting yokai would be interested the tangled hair left in a brush. I didn't mean it to come out this way but I kind of like the disgusted look he's giving the brush. He's like, "Dafaq ees dis??"

Keukegen
A shy monster that likes to hide in most damp places and spreads disease where ever it goes.

I came really close to giving him a top hat and monocle.

Hyosube
A more agressive and malevolent cousin of the kappa. It's easily recognizable by its bald head, hairy body, and toothy grin.

Hyosube are related to Kappa? They don't LOOK like it.
