The GARLICKS on Indiegogo and some other stuff!!

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 19, 2012, 12:05 AM
There's a new comic I really want to read, but i can't read it unless it gets funded!

It's called THE GARLIKS by Lea Hernandez and it's on Indiegogo right now!

(Crap. I was really hoping I could embed that)

My favorite comics tend to be ones that mix supernatural fantasy elements with slice of life comedy. This comic had me from the words "vampire that wants to be a comicer". Plus, it's got some really cute art, enjoyable characters, and  a few interesting concepts. So if any of those things sound good to you too skip over to its Indiegogo page and donate. There's a lot of incentives too, like prints and art bags.

On a somewhat related note, sometimes I wonder how many young people- particularly amoungst my followers- read comics besides manga. Sometimes it seems like too many people are completely unaware that there are American comics outside of superheroes. It saddens me because I truly think comics are a great medium that deserves to be both experienced and explored by more people.

So allow me to shove this list of comics I personally recommend in your face:

Anya's Ghost
American Born Chinese
My Faith in Franky
The Best of the Spirit
Crogan Adventures
Scary Godmother
Beasts of Burden
Little Vampire
Maus
The Eternal Smile: Three Stories
Same Difference
Usagi Yojimbo
The Professor's Daughter
The Goon
Hellboy
Scott Pilgrim
Blacksad

And just for good measure, here's a list of comic publishers that aren't Marvel or DC:
SLG Publishing
First Second
Archaia
Dark Horse
Oni Press
Image
Drawn & Quarterly
BOOM! Studios

And then there's Vertigo which is technically a subsidiary of DC. Still recommendable none the less.

If you have anything to say about my selections or about your comic reading habits please feel free to leave a comment. I'd really love to hear your opinion on the matter.

One last thing, I've started a couple of blogs on Tumblr: Creepy-Crazy-Kooky-Spooky and Gegege no Blog. Check 'em out if you're interested.

What is "Usagi Yojimbo"(兎用心棒)?

It's a American comic series about a samurai rabbit and his adventures in ancient Japan. It's quite notable among American independent comics. Maybe the Wikipedia page will help: [link]

Nope! I may not be an expert on superheroes, but Spider-Man is well known as one of the unluckiest superheroes in comics. He's constantly struggled to make enough money for himself and his aunt to live on. There's no way he'd have the money or resources to get a giant robot.

I am sorry that I did not reply to you sooner.
By the way, is your icon a character of a U.S. cartoon?

No, actually it's a cartoon version of me making Neko Musume's monster face from Gegege no Kitaro. Normally I'd use a normal-faced icon of my cartoon self but I made this one for Halloween and I still haven't gotten around to redesigning it.
